Here’s something you might not know about shampoo: Most of it isn’t biodegradable. You’d think that something designed to be washed straight down the drain would be made with ingredients that break down and don’t poison our waterways. But nope. Your standard bottle of shampoo these days contains parabens, silicone, phthalates, and sulfates, all of which stick around in the environment long, long after your shampoo bottle lands in the recycling bin. They could be having a negative effect on your health, too—ingredients like phthalates (read artificial fragrances) and parabens (a type of synthetic preservative) are potential hormone disruptors.

Luckily, you won’t find any of these questionable substances in organic shampoos, which get their cleaning power from ingredients found in nature and their scents from essential oils. Making the switch can take some getting used to, as organic shampoos don’t always lather up the way synthetic varieties do (they don’t include sodium lauryl sulfate, a popular foaming agent)—but that doesn’t mean they’re not getting the job done. If you're not quite ready to make your own homemade shampoo, here are eleven organic and natural shampoos that will leave your hair soft, sleek, and smelling awesome.
