Most of us have seen the commercials for Crest Whitestrips. They are a relatively cheap alternative to in-office teeth whitening procedures (Americans, keen for a pearly white smile, pay on average of $600 per visit). On Amazon, the three top-selling oral care products are all teeth-whitening. And while the top-selling two products are Crest Whitestrips and Crest whitening toothpaste, a natural activated charcoal powder comes in a close third and has more fanatical reviews than both the Crest products together.
More than 8,700 people have reviewed The Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder, and 84 percent of them gave it a 5-star rating. People are posting before and after photos claiming that one single use of the product whitens teeth by a few shades. A few reviewers were skeptical of the pictures, but still said that after using the product for a week, their teeth were lighter.
The best part? It is all-natural. The teeth whitener is made out of organic coconut activated charcoal powder, bentonite (an organic clay), and orange seed oil. Activated charcoal is the byproduct of slowly burnt coconut shells. It is highly adsorbent, meaning it binds to other particles quickly. So, the charcoal pulls stains off teeth while the bentonite adds minerals. And orange seed oil is an anti-inflammatory natural whitener. (Here are 8 healthy uses for activated charcoal—and 3 you can skip.)
Reviewers with sensitive teeth say that unlike other whitening products, the Active Wow teeth whitening powder doesn’t cause any extra teeth sensitivity. They did warn that the powder is messy, but some people provided tips to avoid the mess—like brushing your teeth in the shower, or rinsing out multiple times.
