Searching for a natural deodorant that won't leave your pits smelly? I was, too—and that's why I tested 9 organic and natural deodorants out for a month to see which could keep me (relatively) dry and unoffensive. I also was in search of a stink-blocker that would be made from natural ingredients gentle on the skin, and that that would help me skip the aluminum, too.

(Slash your cholesterol, burn stubborn belly fat, solve your insomnia, and more—naturally!—with Rodale's Eat For Extraordinary Health & Healing!)

Avoiding aluminum in antiperspirants has been a common reason people turn to natural deodorants, though studies show it's not as dangerous as we once thought. Regardless, if you don't want it on your skin, there are tons of good products to pick from for deodorants, just keep in mind that these won't be anti-perspirants. To solve the natural-deo conundrum, I tested out a bunch for a month just when it was getting hot to see how they fared. (If you want to make your own deodorant, we've got a guide for that, too: 3 ways to make your own deodorant.)

After a month of hard use—which included daily runs and regular workouts—I was surprised at what I learned. Below, my top picks for amazing natural deodorants you can stock up on that actually work.

Primal Pit Paste

It was a hard sell to get me really into a deodorant paste. It gets on your hands, you need to soften it with your fingers, and it makes the whole process just a little bit messier.

BUT Primal Pit Paste, among a few other gems, won me over. It has organic and natural ingredients with no aluminum, no parabens, no toxic chemicals, and the paste blends on the smoothest of any that I tried, which makes for easy application, and the scent stays put (even through a hot yoga class). Its baking soda ingredient neutralizes the bacteria that cause body odor.

Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet’s stick deodorant comes in compostable, biodegradable packaging, and though pushing the stick up is a bit more challenging than in a typical plastic-packaged deodorant stick (arm-strength, ladies!)  it rolls on smooth and has light, pleasant scents. I found this one to be an easy winner—the scent lasted, and the sweat was minimal. Plus it's paraben free, sulfate free and extra points for that plastic free packaging.

Captain Blankenship

This winning cream deodorant has 100% natural, non-GMO organic coconut oil and shea butter. It's also got baking soda and is scented with organic lime, vetiver, and lemongrass essential oils which help to neutralize odors. I found that it applied well, and softened quickly to the touch so it wasn't a struggle to put on evenly. The zingy lime and lemongrass seemed to keep body odor smells at bay even after a walk outside in the sun at lunchtime, so this one gets two thumbs up. (P.S. I'm also a fan of Captain Blankenship's dry shampoo.)

Schmidt's

You can find Schmidt's from Target to your local grocery store, which is helpful. On top of that, they have different lines of deodorants based on need, from tea tree to a charcoal and magnesium enriched version that packs a punch. Plant-based powders help absorb wetness without the use of aluminum. The charcoal scent was slightly masculine, but I liked it, and it was light enough that I wore it before and after my workouts and still felt fresh. Schmidt's also comes in a variety of scents like jasmine, coconut pineapple and lavender.

Sedge & Bee

Sedge & Bee deodorant by Qhemet Biologics has a natural, chemical-free formula of coconut oil, baking soda and cornstarch—and cute packaging. After several test runs with this deodorant, the best part is the scent is soothing and mild, and it goes on smooth. The one drawback is if you apply too liberally, it can end up on the armpits of your clothes, which I experienced when I applied it and found myself sweating a bit in the heat. The marks came out in the wash, but it's a good thing to keep an eye on.

Overall though, this was one of my favorites as far as a good, natural scent, and easy roll-on application.

Nubian Heritage

Whether or not you warm to Nubian Heritage deodorants will depend a lot on personal fragrance preferences because the scents are unconventional. I was a huge fan of the feel and smell of the aluminum-free natural Abyssinian Oil and Chia Seed deodorant with Amaranth Extract and Ginseng, and I also liked the African Black Soap deodorant, as well as Coconut & Papaya for everyday office use, but not for working out. When I tried running with the chia seed version, I found that it irritated my inner arm and wasn't smooth enough for athletic use. But I loved the scents, the chia seed formula was rich and creamy, and the roll-on applicator was easy to use, so I would wear it for a non-workout day, or after a workout.

Soapwalla

This deodorant was the third cream applicator I tried. This one had a bit more texture, but went on nicely once I molded it a bit with your fingers, and it lasted even through long meetings and a long commute home, all the way out to dinner afterwards. Soapwalla uses vegetable powders and clays, and essential oils like lavender, peppermint, and tea tree for their moisture-absorbing formula.

Korina Naturals

The mild, deodorants from this San Francisco company are aluminum-free and 100 percent natural, in scents like black with activated charcoal, lavender, cedar and tea tree, and citrus and eucalyptus. The scents are pleasant and not overpowering, and definitely lasted through most of the day. I would reapply if I was going somewhere after work, and will likely continue to use these.

Gasp! These are the same people that make Amazon's bestselling nontoxic facial sunscreen. And yes, now they make deodorant, too! All of their ingredients are top-rated by the EWG, and they are free of biologically harmful chemicals. I test drove the aloe & tea flower version on a few 3-mile runs, and found that though I had a mild sweat at the end, they did a great job of keeping my skin smelling good and free of strong body odor. I highly recommend picking up a pack of these.
