why organic matters

It is very, very, very likely that, sometime this year, you bought some organic food. Organic is the fastest-growing sector of the food economy, and one that is increasingly mainstream: according to a 2016 Nielsen study, more than 82 percent of U.S. households buy organic food on a regular basis.

Very possibly, you bought organic food because you know it’s better for you, and your kids (and even your pet). What you might not have known is that the benefits of organic food don’t end there. Organically produced food (and other organically-produced goods, from natural shampoos to organic mattresses) have a positive ripple effect that stretches all the way from the tiniest soil microbe to the earth’s outer atmosphere: in addition to making people healthier, organic farming helps build soil health and fight climate change.

Organically-managed soils draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere (where it contributes to global warming) to hold it in the soil (where it feeds plants, making our food more nutritious). This benefits everyone: healthier soils mean healthier food, healthier people, and a healthier planet.

That’s why Organic Valley—a cooperative of over 2,000 small organic family farmers—and Organic Life have teamed up to bring you inspiring stories about the people, communities, and companies who are making the world a better place, literally from the ground on up.

Because good farming—organic farming—matters.
